We're surrounded by a world of pressure to dress and look our best. But what happens when perfection just doesn't come so easily to us? I've made it my mission to be the fairy godmother of helpful hints for anyone who is working towards a career in the fashion world. This is my 'Diary of an Intern'.

Day 1

Day 1:

It was my first day at News International and Day 1, unlike when I first went to visit, I did not get stuck in the revolving doors (hey, they were heavy!). I think I did get on the wrong side of the security men though, they didn't seem to be amused at a blonde girl unintentionally trying to breach their security systems since I didn't have a pass.
The elevators are the most confusing thing I have seen. No seriously, I know I've just moved up from Dorset but you actually have to press a series of buttons to find out which lift to get in! I made it up finally, thanks to a nice woman wearing some very pretty shoes. I could tell where Fabulous were straight off because it's written in bright pink all across the wall! It was just such an amazing feeling knowing that I was around talented journalists so I stumbled around grinning like an idiot until someone showed me to my desk (yep, my own desk!)
That's my lovely view from the intern desk.
So onto another very important topic- the first day outfit. I had no idea really whether the girls at Fabulous would be wearing pencil skirts and heels or jeans and pumps. I did what any girl would do, wore a pair of heels and packed a pair of flats in my Longchamp bag:) My lovely mother always says 'just pop a pair of flats in your bag', and with tackling the underground, she really is right!

In the afternoon, to celebrate the magazine's 5th birthday we were all given red velvet
cupcakes, individually packed and seriously gorgeous! 500ish calories, who cares!

Intern tips of the day:

*Learn a bit about using a Mac- you don't want to be asking 'why can't I right click?' to the editor! Maybe watch a youtube tutorial or get a friend with a Mac to give you some pointers.

*Look to see if you can find out the names of people who work in your future department-  it'll make your life easier if you can recognise them. Saves you wandering around the office staring awkwardly at someone till they say 'you okay there?'

*Offer tea to the people around you. Or if someone's off to do a tea round then offer to join them- it gives you a great chance to have a chat and find out how long they've been there, or even how they got their job.

A little bit about me

I was planning on giving you all an over-view of what I'm going to be doing over the next few months but, shock, I've been a little busy and neglected my blogging.
So just to explain, I'm a magazine journalism graduate (with an NCTJ)...or I will be a graduate if I can just pass the silly law exam. Being into fashion and writing I knew I needed to do a placement somewhere so that my CV would look good and to also make up for the fact that I never actually went to uni. So I started searching back in November last year and got two contributor roles writing for Thelookhit.com and fashionjuices.co.uk. Both great online fashion mags and I would recommend anyone who wants experience with a print magazine (or a good online one) to try and get some contributor roles because it just shows you can write and if they ever ask you for work samples then you've got some ready to send!
I was starting to get a little bit exhausted with hearing no's, or actually no replies at all, from the places I was applying to. Finally, just out of chance, I saw on Twitter that Fabulous mag (comes with The Sun on Sundays) was looking for a lifestyle intern. I immediately replied, sending my CV, cover letter and samples of my work and within a day, the lovely Lifestyle editor got back to me. To cut a long story short, I was given a 2 month internship with them!
So here I am, sat here in my new room in London, exhausted after a busy day at Fabulous, but smiling because I still feel like the luckiest girl ever.
This is what my blog will be, a day to day guide of coping with situations that get thrown at an intern. Chances are I will be making some mistakes so if I share them with you then hopefully you'll be better prepared:)

Welcome!

Hi everyone!

If you've visited my blog in the past then you'll notice that I've had a bit of a restructure- by that I mean I have wiped clean all of my old posts. Why? Because as much as I loved writing about day to day fashion and beauty, I realised, is my blog actually really giving you all what you're looking for? Probably not, because since you're here reading this them I'm guessing like me you love fashion and hope to one day work for a magazine or for big brand names. For this reason I will now be dedicating my blog to all of you who are finding it really hard to break into this competitive industry, whether you want to know the right course to take to get you there or how to land that internship you really want.
I'm not pretending that I am anything of an expert in the fashion world (i'm still a waitress!) but I am working my hardest to land my dream job at a fashion magazine. For this reason I will be blogging to you about my struggles, what I learn, and how I'm working my way to my goals. Is it like the blind leading the blind? Probably, but if I can help even one of you reach your own dream position then my mission is complete.
Keep checking back because I promise this will be one entertaining ride!
